스위스의 도시들을 여행하다 보면, 마을마다, 도시마다 꼭 하나씩은 ‘그곳을 대표하는 성당이나 교회’가 있다. 체르마트, 루체른, 베른, 인터라켄… 작은 시골 마을조차 하늘을 향해 솟은 첨탑 하나를 품고 있었다.
그런데 신기하게도, 우리나라에도 교회는 많지만 주변과 어울리지 않는 경우가 종종 있는데, 스위스의 교회들은 마치 오래전부터 그 땅의 일부였던 것처럼 자연스럽게 자리잡고 있었다. 그냥 ‘종교 건물’이 아니라, 도시와 사람과 역사가 함께 숨쉬는 공간 같았다.
취리히도 예외가 아니다. 취리히에는 특히 유명한 세 곳의 교회가 있다. 프라우뮌스터, 그로스뮌스터, 그리고 성피터 교회.
그중에서도 이번 여행에서 가장 기억에 남은 곳은 단연 프라우뮌스터였다.
프라우뮌스터 – 빛으로 그려낸 기도
반호프슈트라세를 따라 리마트강 쪽으로 천천히 걷다 보면, 높고 화려한 첨탑은 아니지만 단아하게 하늘을 가리키는 첨탑이 보인다. 이곳이 바로 프라우뮌스터( #Fraumünste ), 독일어로 ‘여성 수도원의 교회’라는 뜻을 가진 성당이다.
처음 안으로 들어섰을 때는 주변의 고요함과 단정함에 먼저 놀랐다. 화려한 장식보다는 절제된 공간이었는데, 진짜 아름다움은 스테인드글라스 창문 앞에서 시작됐다.
샤갈의 색채, 빛으로 전해지는 이야기
프라우뮌스터를 찾은 가장 큰 이유는 마르크 #샤갈 (Marc Chagall)이 남긴 스테인드글라스 작품을 직접 보고 싶어서였다. 남쪽 벽면에 자리한 다섯 개의 거대한 창문 앞에 섰을 때, 말로 표현하기 어려운 감동이 밀려왔다.
파란색과 붉은색, 노란색이 섞이며 만드는 빛의 파도는 마치 성경 이야기를 한 폭의 추상화로 옮겨놓은 듯했다.
멀리서 보면 한 편의 예술작품 같지만, 가까이서 바라보면 인물들의 표정과 눈빛까지 살아 있었다. 햇빛이 유리를 통과할 때, 그 빛은 바닥을, 벽을, 그리고 내 마음까지 다른 색으로 물들였다. 그 순간, ‘예배’라는 것이 꼭 설교나 기도가 아니라 이런 빛의 경험일 수도 있겠구나 하는 생각이 들었다.
프리히홀츠의 고요함
반대편에는 오토 프리히홀츠(Augusto Giacometti로 알려진 작가 포함)와 같은 스위스 작가의 스테인드글라스가 있었다. 샤갈이 감각과 감정을 강하게 흔드는 색채라면, 프리히홀츠의 작품은 마치 깊은 호수 같은 고요함을 준다. 푸른빛이 감도는 창문 앞에서는 눈을 감고 조용히 명상에 잠기고 싶어졌다. 두 작가의 빛을 같은 공간에서 동시에 경험할 수 있다는 건 정말 스위스가 가진 문화적 풍요로움 때문이 아닐까 싶다.
프라우뮌스터가 품은 시간
프라우뮌스터는 단순히 아름다운 교회가 아니다.
853년 독일의 루이왕이 설립한 여성 수도원에서 시작된 이곳은 당시로서는 드물게 여성 수도원장이 도시 정치에 참여했던 상징적인 장소이기도 했다.

종교개혁 이후 수도원 기능은 사라지고 지금은 개신교 교회로 운영되고 있지만, 천년 가까운 시간이 켜켜이 쌓인 건물 내부에서는 역사의 숨결이 느껴졌다.
로마네스크 양식의 기둥, 고딕식 아치, 그리고 목조 천장은 교회가 걸어온 시간을 보여주고 있었다. 조용히 의자에 앉아 창문을 바라보다 보면, 단순한 ‘관광’이 아니라 영혼의 순례를 하고 있는 듯한 느낌을 받았다.
#그로스뮌스터 – 웅장함의 상징
아쉽게도 이번 여행에서는 그로스뮌스터( #Grossmünster ) 내부에 들어가 볼 수 없었다. 공사 중이라 외관만 감상할 수 있었지만, 멀리 린덴호프 언덕에서 바라본 쌍둥이 탑의 위용은 잊을 수가 없다.
취리히를 대표하는 실루엣이라고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 언젠가 다시 취리히를 찾는다면, 그로스뮌스터의 내부까지 꼭 둘러보고 싶다.
프라우뮌스터와 그로스뮌스터는 단순한 관광지가 아니라 빛과 역사, 그리고 사람들의 시간이 녹아 있는 공간이었다.
특히 샤갈의 스테인드글라스 앞에 섰을 때 느꼈던 감동은 여전히 마음속에 남아 있다. 햇빛이 유리를 통과해 만들어낸 색채의 향연은 사진으로 담을 수 없는, 그 순간에만 존재하는 기적 같았다.
취리히를 여행한다면, 이 교회들은 반드시 일정에 넣기를 추천한다. 단순히 건축물을 보는 것이 아니라, 빛과 시간 속에서 새로운 마음을 만나는 경험이 될 것이다.
When you travel to cities in Switzerland, there is at least one 'church or cathedral that represents it' in each town and city. Cermatt, Lucerne, Bern, Interlaken… Even a small rural village had a single spire rising to the sky.
Curiously, there are many churches in Korea, but they often do not fit in with their surroundings, and Swiss churches have been naturally established as if they had long been part of the land. It was not just a 'religious building', but a space where cities, people, and history breathe together.
Zurich is no exception. There are three particularly famous churches in Zurich: Fraumunster, Grossmunster, and st. Peter's Church.
Among them, the most memorable place on this trip was by far Fraumunster.
Fraumunster – a lighted prayer
If you walk slowly along the Banhofstra세e toward the Limat River, you can see a steeple that points gracefully to the sky, although it is not a tall and colorful steeple. This is the cathedral, which means #Fraumünste, or "the church of a female monastery" in German.
When I first entered, I was first surprised by the quietness and neatness around me. It was an understated space rather than a fancy decoration, and the real beauty began in front of the stained glass window.
Chagall's color, a story told by light
The biggest reason I visited Fraumunster was because I wanted to see the stained glass work left by Marc Chagall in person. Standing in front of five huge windows on the southern wall, I was moved by words that were hard to describe.
The waves of light made by mixing blue, red, and yellow seemed to have translated the Bible story into an abstract painting.
From a distance, it seems like a work of art, but when viewed closely, the expressions and eyes of the characters were alive. When sunlight passed through the glass, the light colored the floor, the wall, and my mind with different colors. At that moment, I thought that 'worship' could not necessarily be a sermon or prayer, but an experience of light like this.
the stillness of Freichholtz
On the other side were stained glasses by a Swiss artist, such as Otto Frihyholtz (including one known as Augusto Giacometti). If Chagall is a color that shakes the senses and emotions strongly, Frihyholtz's work gives the calm as if it were a deep lake. In front of the blue window, I wanted to close my eyes and quietly immerse myself in meditation. I think it is because of the cultural abundance of Switzerland that the two artists can experience the light at the same time in the same space.
The Time of Fraumunster
Fraumunster is not just a beautiful church.
Started in 853 at the Women's Monastery founded by King Louis of Germany, it was also a symbolic place where female abbot participated in urban politics, which was rare at the time.
After the Reformation, the monastic function disappeared and is now operated as a Protestant church, but inside the building, where nearly a thousand years have been piled up, the breath of history was felt.
Romanesque columns, gothic arches, and wooden ceilings showed the time the church had walked. Sitting quietly in a chair and looking at the window, I felt like I was making a pilgrimage to the soul, not just a 'tourism'.
#Grossmünster – a symbol of grandeur
Unfortunately, I couldn't see inside the #Grossmünster during this trip. I could only appreciate the exterior because it was under construction, but I cannot forget the greatness of the twin towers I saw from the hill of Lindenhof in the distance.
It was not an exaggeration to say that it was a silhouette representing Zurich. If I ever visit Zurich again, I would like to look around the interior of Grossmünster.
Fraumunster and Grossmünster were not just tourist destinations, but spaces where light, history, and people's time melted.
In particular, the emotion I felt when I stood in front of Chagall's stained glasses remains in my mind. The feast of colors created by sunlight passing through the glass was like a miracle that could not be captured in a photograph and existed only at that moment.
These churches are recommended to be included in the schedule when traveling to Zurich. It will be an experience of meeting new minds in light and time, not just looking at the architecture.
