인천공항의 아침, 여행의 시작
여행이란 참 묘하다. 출발 하루 전까지는 이것저것 챙기느라 정신이 없는데, 공항에 도착하는 순간 모든 것이 자연스럽게 흘러간다. 이번 여행의 목적지는 스위스 취리히(ZRH). 그동안 사진으로만 보던 알프스와 고즈넉한 호수를 직접 보고 싶어 오랫동안 꿈꿔온 여행이었다.
새벽 6시 40분쯤 인천공항 제2터미널에 도착했다. KE917편은 오전 9시 05분 출발이었지만, 대한항공 장거리 노선은 사람이 많을 걸 알기에 서둘러서 도착했다. 공항은 이미 활기가 넘쳤다. 여행 가방을 끌고 카트에 올린 가족들, 노트북을 들고 바쁜 걸음으로 걷는 출장객들, 그리고 나처럼 두근거리는 마음을 감출 수 없는 여행자들까지. 출국장의 공기 자체가 이미 설레는 향기로 가득했다.
대한항공 체크인 카운터에서 짐을 부치고 탑승권을 받았다. 탑승구는 252번 게이트, 출국심사와 보안검색대를 거쳐 면세구역으로 들어서니 이제 정말 출발하는구나 하는 실감이 났다. 커피 한 잔을 손에 들고 창밖으로 보이는 파란색 대한항공기의 꼬리날개를 바라보며, 잠시 후 저 비행기가 나를 스위스로 데려다줄 것이라는 생각에 마음이 두근거렸다.

KE917편은 대한항공 B777-300ER 기종으로 운영된다. 좌석은 3-3-3 배열, 비즈니스 클래스(프레스티지석)와 일반석(이코노미석)으로 구성되어 있었다. 장거리 노선답게 기내는 넓고 안정감이 느껴졌다. 창가 쪽 자리를 예약해두었기에, 비행 내내 바깥 풍경을 실컷 감상할 수 있을 것 같았다.
좌석에 앉아보니 생각보다 넉넉했다. 다리 공간도 여유 있고 좌석 쿠션도 편안해서 12시간 넘는 장거리 비행이 조금은 수월할 것 같았다. 대한항공 특유의 파란색 시트와 담요, 그리고 정갈하게 놓인 헤드폰과 슬리퍼까지, 모든 것이 깔끔했다. 개인 모니터에는 최신 영화와 드라마, 음악, 게임까지 다양한 콘텐츠가 준비되어 있어 지루할 틈이 없을 듯했다.
승무원분들이 환하게 인사를 하며 담요와 물티슈를 나눠주셨는데, 한국어는 물론 영어, 독일어까지 자연스럽게 안내해주는 모습이 인상적이었다. “긴 여행이니 편히 쉬시라”는 미소 한마디가 낯선 비행을 훨씬 포근하게 만들어주었다.
이륙 전, 기대감과 긴장감이 교차하는 순간
비행기가 활주로를 향해 이동할 때 창밖을 내다보았다. 줄지어 서 있는 다른 항공기들, 활주로를 비행하며 떠오르는 비행기, 그리고 멀리서 깔끔하게 정렬된 화물 차량들. 이 거대한 공항이 하나의 유기체처럼 움직이고 있다는 게 늘 경이롭다.
탑승 안내 방송이 끝나고 안전 비디오가 나오자 비로소 여행의 실감이 났다. 옆자리에 앉은 부부도 유럽 여행을 간다며 즐겁게 대화를 나누고 있었고, 뒷좌석에서는 아마 스위스로 유학 가는 듯 보이는 학생이 부모님과 통화를 하고 있었다. 여러 이야기가 뒤섞인 비행기 안에서 나는 그저 창밖만 바라보며 “드디어 간다”는 생각뿐이었다.

안정 고도에 오르자마자 승무원들이 음료를 나눠주기 시작했다. 기본 물과 주스, 그리고 대한항공의 시그니처 음료인 진저에일과 매실 주스가 인기였다. 나는 매실 주스를 선택했는데, 상쾌하고 깔끔한 맛이 장거리 비행에 딱이었다.
조금 후 기내식이 제공되었다. 메뉴는 한식과 서양식 중 선택이 가능했고, 나는 고민 끝에 대한항공의 전통 메뉴라 할 수 있는 비빔밥을 골랐다. 고추장과 참기름을 넣어 슥슥 비벼 먹으니 한국의 맛이 입안 가득 퍼졌다. 옆자리 승객은 치킨 스테이크를 먹었는데, 향이 꽤 좋았다. 디저트로는 달콤한 케이크와 과일이 나왔고, 따뜻한 커피까지 완벽한 코스로 제공됐다.
식사 후엔 핫타월 서비스가 나와 깔끔하게 손을 닦을 수 있었다. 승무원분들은 늘 미소를 지으며 필요한 것이 없는지 살펴봐 주셨고, 특히 아이를 데리고 탑승한 가족들을 세심하게 챙겨주는 모습이 인상적이었다.
창밖 풍경 – 하늘 위에서 만나는 또 다른 세계
장거리 비행에서 창가 자리를 선택한 건 최고의 결정이었다. 이륙 후 한참 지나 한반도가 멀어지고, 구름 위로 떠오른 비행기는 끝없이 펼쳐진 푸른 하늘을 보여주었다. 하얀 솜사탕 같은 구름 바다와 그 위를 비추는 햇살은 마치 다른 세계에 온 듯한 기분을 주었다.
러시아 상공을 지날 땐 창밖으로 끝없이 이어진 설원과 얼어붙은 강이 보였고, 유럽으로 다가갈수록 드넓은 초록빛 평야와 도시의 작은 불빛들이 나타났다. 장거리 비행이 힘들다고들 하지만, 창밖 풍경을 감상하는 시간만큼은 오히려 이 여정의 하이라이트였다.
편안한 휴식과 기내 엔터테인먼트
비행이 절반쯤 진행되자 승객 대부분이 잠에 들기 시작했다. 불빛이 차분하게 줄어들고 기내가 조용해지니 마치 공중의 작은 마을이 된 듯했다. 나는 담요를 덮고 영화를 켰다. 최신 한국 영화부터 헐리우드 신작까지 선택지가 많아 지루할 틈이 없었다. 중간중간 게임을 하고, 음악을 들으며 여정을 즐겼다.
대한항공 기내는 온도와 습도가 잘 조절되어 있어 건조함이 덜했고, 필요할 때마다 물을 챙겨주는 승무원 덕분에 목이 마를 일도 없었다. 작은 팁을 드리자면, 장거리 비행에서는 목 베개, 보습제, 립밤, 슬리퍼는 필수다. 덕분에 긴 비행도 훨씬 편안하게 보낼 수 있었다.
취리히 도착 – 첫 발을 내딛는 설렘
12시간이 조금 넘는 비행 끝에, 드디어 취리히 공항에 도착했다. 착륙 직전 창밖으로 보이는 스위스의 초록빛 초원과 알프스 산맥의 웅장한 모습은 말로 표현하기 어려울 만큼 아름다웠다. ‘드디어 스위스에 왔구나’라는 감동이 밀려왔다.
비행기가 게이트에 연결되고, 승객들이 하나둘씩 내리기 시작했다. 기내를 빠져나올 때 승무원들이 밝게 “즐거운 여행 되세요!”라고 인사해주셨다. 긴 비행을 무사히 마치고 낯선 공항에 도착했지만, 그 한마디가 마음을 따뜻하게 만들어주었다.
취리히 공항은 깔끔하고 안내 표지가 잘 되어 있어 입국심사와 수하물 찾기가 편했다. 밖으로 나서는 순간, 알프스에서 불어오는 시원한 바람이 맞이해줬다. 비행 내내 상상했던 스위스의 공기가 바로 이거구나 싶었다.

Morning at Incheon Airport, the start of the trip
Traveling is very strange. I was busy preparing things until a day before departure, but everything flows naturally the moment I arrive at the airport. The destination of this trip is Zurich, Switzerland. It was a trip I had long dreamed of because I wanted to see the Alps and tranquil lakes in person, which I had only seen in pictures.
We arrived at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 at around 6:40 a.m. The KE917 flight departed at 9:05 a.m., but the Korean Air long-distance flight arrived in a hurry because we knew there would be a lot of people. The airport was already full of life. From family members who dragged their suitcases into the cart, business travelers who were walking with their laptops, and travelers who couldn't hide their excitement like me. The air at the departure hall was already full of exciting scents.
I checked in my luggage at the check-in counter of Korean Air and got a boarding pass. Entering the duty-free zone after passing through gate No. 252, departure screening and security checkpoints, I realized that I have really started now. Looking out the window at the tail wings of a blue Korean Air flight with a cup of coffee in hand, my heart was pounding at the thought that the plane would take me to Switzerland after a while.
KE917 – The model and first impression that will carry me today
KE917 is operated as a Korean Air B777-300ER model. Seats consisted of a 3-3-3 arrangement, business class (prestige seat), and general seat (economy seat). As a long-distance route, the cabin was spacious and felt secure. Since I had reserved a window seat, I felt like I could enjoy the outside view throughout the flight.
Seated in the seat, it was more spacious than I thought. With plenty of leg space and comfortable seat cushions, I thought a long flight of more than 12 hours would be a little easier. Everything was neat, including Korean Air's unique blue seats and blankets, and neatly placed headphones and slippers. There was no time to be bored as the personal monitor was prepared with a variety of contents ranging from the latest movies, dramas, music and games.
The flight attendants greeted me brightly and handed out blankets and wet wipes, and it was impressive to see them guide me not only Korean but also English and German naturally. A smile saying, "Rest in peace because it's a long trip," made the unfamiliar flight much more cozy.
Before takeoff, when anticipation and tension intersect
As the plane was moving towards the runway, I looked out the window. A row of other aircraft, planes flying down the runway, and neatly aligned cargo vehicles from afar. It's always a wonder that this huge airport is moving like an organism.
It was only when the boarding announcement was over and the safety video was released that I felt the reality of the trip. The couple sitting next to me were also having a pleasant conversation, saying they were going to Europe, and in the back seat, a student who seemed to be studying in Switzerland was talking to his parents on the phone. On the plane with a mix of stories, I just looked out the window and thought, "I'm finally going."
The plane stood on the runway and the engine sped up with a loud roar. The moment my body was pressed back and soared into the sky, strangely, all the fatigue and worries before the trip seemed to fly away.
In-flight Service – Korean Air's Careful Consideration
As soon as they reached the steady altitude, the flight attendants began handing out the drinks. Basic water and juice, and ginger ale and plum juice, Korean Air's signature drinks, were popular. I chose plum juice, and the refreshing and clean taste was perfect for long flights.
A little later, the in-flight meal was served. The menu was available between Korean and Western, and after much consideration, I chose Bibimbap, the traditional Korean menu. When I mixed it with red pepper paste and sesame oil, the taste of Korea spread to my mouth. The passenger next to me had chicken steak, which smelled pretty good. Sweet cake and fruit were served for dessert, and even warm coffee was served as the perfect course.
After eating, a hot towel service came out and I was able to clean my hands neatly. The flight attendants always smiled and looked at whether there was anything they needed, and it was especially impressive to see how they took care of the family members on board with their children.
Window Scenery – Another World Meeting in the Sky
Choosing a window seat for a long flight was the best decision. The Korean Peninsula moved away a long time after takeoff, and the plane that floated above the clouds showed an endless blue sky. The sea of white cotton candy-like clouds and the sunlight shining above gave the impression of a different world.
As I passed over Russia, I saw endless snow fields and frozen rivers out of the window, and as I approached Europe, I saw a wide green plain and small lights in the city. It is said that long-distance flying is difficult, but the time to appreciate the scenery outside the window was rather the highlight of this journey.
Relaxation and in-flight entertainment
As the flight was halfway through, most of the passengers began to fall asleep. As the lights decreased calmly and the cabin became quiet, it seemed like a small town in the air. I put on a blanket and turned on the movie. There were many options, from the latest Korean movies to new Hollywood movies, so there was no time to be bored. I enjoyed playing games, listening to music, and traveling in between.
Korean Air's cabin was less dry because the temperature and humidity were well controlled, and thanks to the flight attendant who provided water whenever needed, I didn't get thirsty. To give you a small tip, a neck pillow, moisturizer, lip balm, and slippers are essential on long flights. Thanks to this, I was able to spend a long flight much more comfortably.
Arrival in Zurich – Excitement to take the first step
After a little more than 12 hours of flight, I finally arrived at Zurich Airport. The magnificent view of the Swiss grasslands and Alps on the right before landing was beyond description. I was moved that I finally came to Switzerland.
The plane was connected to the gate, and passengers began to get off one by one. As I left the plane, the crew greeted me brightly, "Have a nice trip!" I arrived at an unfamiliar airport after a long flight, but those words warmed my heart.
Zurich Airport was neat and well-informed, making it easy to check immigration and find luggage. The moment I stepped outside, the cool breeze from the Alps greeted me. I thought this was the Swiss air I imagined throughout the flight.
