“스위스에서 마테호른을 보지 않았다면, 반쪽짜리 여행이다.”
그만큼 강렬했던 고르너그라트(Gornergrat) 여정.
1. 체르마트에서의 출발, 기대와 떨림
스위스 여행의 하이라이트 중 하나, 고르너그라트 산악열차(Gornergrat Bahn). 체르마트(Zermatt)에서 출발하는 이 전통 톱니바퀴식 산악열차는 해발 3,089m 고르너그라트 정상까지 약 33분간 숨 막히는 오르막 여정을 펼칩니다.
고르너그라트 터미널은 체르마트역 바로 맞은편, 클래식한 목조 느낌의 역사 건물에서 시작되는데 그 자체로 이미 "스위스답다"는 느낌.

2. 땅이 아니라 하늘로 올라가는 기차 고르너그라트 산악열차는 일반 기차와 다르게 중앙에 톱니바퀴가 있는 ‘랙레일’ 방식을 사용합니다.'딱-딱' 소리를 내며 경사진 산길을 오르는 열차는 의외로 안정감 있게 천천히 고도를 올려갑니다. 차창 밖엔 어느새 체르마트 마을이 작아지고, 침엽수림 너머로 마테호른의 날카로운 실루엣이 고개를 내밉니다.
3. 첫 중간역 – 리펠알프(Riffelalp) 해발 2,211m
첫 인상은: "산속 고요한 리조트 마을 같다!"
리펠알프에는 소규모 호텔과 스파가 조용히 들어서 있으며, 스키 시즌엔 이곳에서 슬로프로 바로 연결되기도 합니다. 겨울이 아니라면 트레킹을 시작하는 사람들이 많아요. 이 역을 지나면 열차는 더욱 가파른 경사를 타고 드디어 ‘고산지대의 문턱’을 넘기 시작합니다.
4. 리펠베르크(Riffelberg) – 고도가 확 느껴진다 해발 2,582m
이 구간부터 나무가 점차 사라지고, 풍경은 초목 → 암석 → 설경으로 변화합니다. 눈 위를 걷는 하이커, 등반 장비를 멘 알피니스트,
그리고 뾰족한 마테호른이 더욱 가까워진 풍경. 열차 안에서는 모두가 조용히 창밖을 응시합니다. 말 그대로 ‘그림 속을 지나가는 기차’입니다.
5. 로텐보덴(Rotenboden) – 리펠제의 유혹 해발 2,815m
이곳은 바로, 그 유명한 리펠제(Riffelsee) 호수가 있는 곳. 날씨가 맑으면, 이 호수에 마테호른이 반사되어 거울처럼 비칩니다. 아쉽게도 우리가 갔을 땐 5월, 눈이 덮여 있어 리펠제는 못 봄 ㅠㅠ 하지만 오히려 그 하얀 설원 위에 발자국 하나 남기는 경험은 더 특별했다. 로텐보덴부터 고르너그라트까지는 도보 15~20분 정도 트레킹도 가능해요. 적당한 경사 + 눈밭 + 절경. 체력이 허락한다면 걸어가는 것도 강추!
6. 도착 – 고르너그라트 정상역(3,089m)
설국열차처럼 달리던 기차가 마침내 도착한 고르너그라트. 내리자마자 숨을 멎게 하는 풍경이 펼쳐집니다. 한쪽엔 마테호른(Matterhorn) 반대편엔 듀푸르슈피체(Dufourspitze, 스위스 최고봉 4,634m) 그 아래로는 거대한 고르너빙하(Gornergletscher)
마치 ‘빙하의 강’이 산맥 사이를 흘러가는 듯한 느낌.
하늘은 투명하고 구름은 발아래 흐릅니다.

하산은 트레킹으로
우리 일정은 고르너그라트까지 열차로 올라간 후 리펠베르크까지 트레킹 → 다시 열차 탑승 루트였어요. 이 구간은 비교적 완만한 내리막이며, 곳곳에 설원, 호수, 하이킹 루트, 나무 벤치 등 멈춰 서서 사진 찍고 쉬기 좋은 포인트들이 많습니다.
길에서 들리는 건 바람 소리, 스틱으로 눈을 딛는 소리, 간혹 들려오는 알프스 소녀 방울소리 같은…
고르너그라트는 단순히 ‘기차 타고 산 정상 간다’ 수준이 아닙니다.
이건 자연과 기술, 스위스가 자랑하는 모든 요소가 집약된 상징적인 코스입니다.
단 한 순간도 지루할 틈이 없고, 그 어떤 날씨에도 실망스럽지 않은 대자연의 전시관이자 스위스 여행의 진정한 하이라이트.

Gornigrat Mountain Train Breaks The Matterhorn Front
Riffelalp → Riffelberg → Rothenboden → Gornigrat
"If you haven't seen the Matterhorn in Switzerland, it's a half trip."
The Gornergrat journey was that intense.
1. Departure from Cermatt, anticipation and tremor
One of the highlights of a trip to Switzerland, the Gornergrat Bahn. Originating from Zermatt, this traditional cogwheel-drive mountain train makes a breathtaking uphill journey to the summit of Gornergrat, 3,089 m above sea level, for about 33 minutes.
The Gornergrat terminal starts in a classic wooden historical building just across from Cermatt Station, and it already feels "Swiss" in itself.
TIP: Preoccupy the right seat in the direction of the window. The Matterhorn comes out to the right window of the train!
2. A train that goes up to the sky, not the ground, uses a "rackrail" method with cogs in the center, unlike ordinary trains. The train, which makes a "tick-tick" sound and climbs the inclined mountain path, raises its altitude slowly with unexpected stability. Outside the car window, the village of Chermat becomes smaller, and the sharp silhouette of the Matterhorn protrudes over the coniferous forest.
3. First Intermediate Station – 2,211 m above sea level in Rifelalp
First impression: "It's like a quiet resort town in the mountains!"
Small hotels and spas are quietly housed in Rifel-Alf, and during the ski season, they are directly connected to the slope from here. Many people start trekking if it's not winter. After this station, the train goes on a steeper slope and finally begins to cross the "threshold of mountainous areas."
4. Riffelberg – The elevation is palpable 2,582 m above sea level
From this section, trees gradually disappear, and the landscape changes to vegetation → rock → snowscape: hikers walking on snow, alpinists carrying climbing gear,
And a view of the pointed Matterhorn getting closer. On the train, everyone stares quietly out the window. It's literally a 'train through the picture'.
5. Rotenboden – Temptation of Rifelje 2,815 m above sea level
This is where the famous Riffelsee Lake is located. When it's sunny, the lake is mirrored by the Matterhorn. Unfortunately, in May, we couldn't see Rifelje because it was covered with snow. However, the experience of leaving a footprint on the white snowfield was even more special. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Rothenboden to Gornergrat. Moderate slope + snowfield + superb view. I highly recommend walking if your physical strength permits!
6. Arrival – Gornigrat Peak Station (3,089 m)
The train, which used to run like a snow train, has finally arrived in Gornerglet. As soon as you get off, you can take your breath away. On one side, on the other side of the Matterhorn, Dufourspitze (the highest peak in Switzerland, 4,634 meters) and below the giant Gornergletscher
It feels like the River of the Ice River is flowing between mountain ranges.
The sky is transparent and the clouds flow under your feet.

The mountain is trekking
Our itinerary was trekking → back up to Rippelberg after taking the train to Gornigrat. This section is relatively gentle downhill, and there are plenty of good stopping, photographing and relaxing spots everywhere, including snow gardens, lakes, hiking trails, and wooden benches.
What you hear on the street is the sound of the wind, the sound of eye contact with a stick, the occasional sound of an Alpine girl bell...
Gornigrat is not just 'going to the top of the mountain by train'.
This is an iconic course that combines nature, technology, and all the elements that Switzerland boasts.
A museum of Mother Nature and a true highlight of a trip to Switzerland that never lets you get bored for a moment, and is not disappointed in any weather.
