4,000m 고봉 29개가 한눈에 들어오는 압도적 절경
1. 고르너그라트를 처음 알게 된 계기
스위스를 여행 계획하면서 대부분의 사람들은 ‘융프라우요흐’나 ‘필라투스’ 같은 이름을 먼저 떠올립니다. 저 역시 그랬습니다. 하지만 여행 준비를 하다 우연히 보게 된 사진 한 장이 저를 고르너그라트로 이끌었습니다. 끝없이 이어진 설산 사이로, 마치 피라미드처럼 완벽한 삼각형의 봉우리가 솟아 있었고, 그 앞에는 거대한 빙하가 파도처럼 흘러내리고 있었습니다. 그 봉우리가 바로 마테호른(Matterhorn), 그리고 그 장관을 가장 잘 볼 수 있는 곳이 고르너그라트 전망대(Gornergrat)였습니다.
2. 체르마트에서 시작하는 여정
고르너그라트 여행의 출발점은 #체르마트 (#Zermatt )입니다.
이 마을은 자동차 진입이 금지되어 있어, 기차나 전기차, 자전거, 도보로만 이동이 가능합니다. 이미 해발 1,620m에 위치한 고산 마을이라 공기부터 맑고, 건물들은 알프스 특유의 목조 양식으로 세워져 있습니다. 마을 곳곳에서는 어느 각도에서든 마테호른의 봉우리가 보이는데, 아침마다 그 봉우리에 햇살이 닿는 순간은 그 자체로 그림입니다.
3. 스위스 최초의 톱니바퀴식 산악열차
1898년에 개통한 고르너그라트반(Gornergrat Bahn)은 스위스 최초의 톱니바퀴식 전동열차입니다. 최대 경사 20%에 달하는 구간을 안정적으로 오르기 위해 특수 톱니바퀴 레일 시스템을 사용합니다. 전동열차임에도 속도는 시속 30km 이하로 느린 편인데, 이는 승객이 차창 밖 풍경을 충분히 즐길 수 있도록 설계된 결과이기도 합니다. 전 구간 길이는 9.3km, 고도 상승은 1,469m에 달하며, 종점인 고르너그라트역은 해발 3,089m에 위치해 있습니다.
4. 탑승 팁 – 무조건 오른쪽!
체르마트에서 출발해 종점까지 약 40분이 소요됩니다.
진행방향 오른쪽 좌석을 반드시 사수하세요.
출발 직후부터 마테호른이 오른쪽 창밖에 등장하고, 중간중간 빙하와 계곡, 알프스 초원이 파노라마처럼 펼쳐집니다.
왼쪽도 풍경이 좋지만, 마테호른을 보러 왔다면 오른쪽이 정답입니다.
5. 중간역에서의 작은 모험
고르너그라트 열차의 매력 중 하나는 중간 하차와 재탑승이 가능하다는 점입니다. 리펠알프(Riffelalp) : 여름에는 야생화가 만발하고, 멀리 마테호른이 보이는 평화로운 숲길이 매력입니다. 리펠베르크(Riffelberg) : 전통적인 산악호텔과 예배당이 있는 마을. 구름이 낀 날에는 운무 속 마테호른을 볼 수 있습니다. 로텐보덴(Rotenboden) : 리펠제(Riffelsee) 호수로 가는 관문. 맑은 날에는 호수에 마테호른이 완벽하게 반영됩니다. 이곳이 ‘반영샷’ 명소입니다.
6. 정상에 오르다 – 고르너그라트 전망대
종점에 도착하면, 눈앞에 펼쳐진 풍경이 말문을 막습니다. 마테호른은 말 그대로 하늘을 찌를 듯 솟아 있고, 그 주변을 4,000m급 고봉 29개가 둘러싸고 있습니다. 전망대는 해발 3,130m에 위치하며, 날씨가 좋은 날에는 이탈리아 국경 너머까지 시야가 닿습니다.
7. 쿨름호텔과 천문대
전망대 옆에는 쿨름호텔 고르너그라트(Kulmhotel Gornergrat)가 자리하고 있습니다. 스위스에서 가장 높은 호텔 중 하나로, 두 개의 거대한 돔에는 천문대가 설치되어 있습니다. 이 호텔은 과거 고산 기상 관측과 빙하 연구의 거점이었고, 현재도 천체 관측과 과학 연구에 활용됩니다. 숙박객은 창밖으로 별과 마테호른을 동시에 바라보는 특별한 경험을 할 수 있습니다.
8. 고르너빙하(Gornergletscher)
전망대에서 남쪽으로 눈을 돌리면 고르너빙하가 거대한 얼음강처럼 펼쳐집니다. 길이 약 12km, 넓이 약 53제곱킬로미터로 스위스에서 두 번째로 큰 빙하입니다. 빙하 표면의 갈라짐과 얼음층의 푸른 빛은 육안으로도 선명하며, 망원렌즈로 보면 빙하의 세부 구조까지 볼 수 있습니다.

전망대 난간에 앉아, 고르너그라트 커피숍레서 산 담아온 따뜻한 커피를 마셨습니다. 차가운 공기가 코끝을 스치고, 바람이 옷 속으로 파고들었지만, 그 순간은 너무나 평화로웠습니다. 이곳에서는 도시의 소음, 일정, 걱정 같은 것들이 모두 사라집니다. 오직 자연과 나만이 존재하는 공간이었죠.

Overwhelming view with 29 4,000m high peaks at a glance
1. How I first got to know Gornagrat
When planning a trip to Switzerland, most people first think of names like 'Jungfraujoch' or 'Philatus.' So did I. However, a photo I came across while preparing for the trip led me to Gornigrat. Between endless snow mountains, a triangular peak that was perfect like a pyramid was rising, and in front of it, a huge glacier was streaming down like a wave. The peak was the Matterhorn, and the best place to see the spectacular view was the Gornigrat Observatory.
2. a journey from Cermatt
The starting point for the Gornagrat trip is #Chermat (#Zermatt).
The village is closed to cars, so you can only travel by train, electric car, bicycle, or foot. The air is clear because it is already an alpine village located 1,620 m above sea level, and the buildings stand in the unique wooden style of the Alps. Throughout the village, you can see the peak of the Matterhorn from any angle, and the moment the sun hits the peak every morning is a picture in itself.
3. Switzerland's First Cogwheel Mountain Train
Gornergrat Bahn, which opened in 1898, is Switzerland's first cog-wheel electric train. It uses a special cog-rail system to stably climb sections that reach a maximum slope of 20%. Even though it is an electric train, its speed is slow, at less than 30 km per hour, which is also the result of its design so that passengers can fully enjoy the view outside the car window. The entire section is 9.3 km long and its elevation reaches 1,469 m, and the last stop, Gornergrat Station, is located 3,089 m above sea level.
4. Boarding Tips – Always Right!
It will take about 40 minutes from Cermatt to the last stop.
Make sure to keep your right seat in the direction of progress.
Immediately after departure, the Matterhorn appears outside the right window, and the glaciers, valleys, and Alps meadows unfold like panoramas in the middle.
The left side also has a good view, but if you came to see the Matterhorn, the right side is the answer.
5. a small adventure in an intermediate station
One of the attractions of the Gornigrat train is that it is possible to get off and get back on. Riffelalp: Wildflowers are in full bloom in the summer, and peaceful forest roads with Matterhorn in the distance are the attractions. Riffelberg: A village with traditional mountain hotels and chapels. On cloudy days, you can see the Matterhorn in the cloud. Rotenboden: The gateway to Lake Riffelsee. On clear days, the Matterhorn is perfectly reflected in the lake. This is the "reflective shot" spot.
6. To Go Top – Gornergrat Observatory
When you reach the terminus, the unfolding view in front of you is speechless. The Matterhorn literally rises sky-high, surrounded by 29 4,000-m-class peaks. The observatory is located at 3,130 m above sea level, and on fine days, the view reaches beyond the Italian border.
7. Coolm Hotel and Observatory
Next to the observatory sits the Kulmhotel Gornergrat. One of the tallest hotels in Switzerland, two massive domes have observatories. The hotel was a base for alpine weather observation and glacial research in the past, and it is still utilized for astronomical observation and scientific research today. Guests can have a special experience looking out the window at the stars and the Matterhorn at the same time.
8. Gornergletscher
Turning south from the observatory, the Gorner Ice River spreads out like a huge ice river. With a length of about 12 km and a width of about 53 square km, it is the second largest glacier in Switzerland. The cracks on the glacier's surface and the blue light on the ice layer are clear to the naked eye, and you can see the detailed structure of the glacier through a telephoto lens.

10. a cup of coffee in the alpine region
Sitting on the railing of the observatory, I drank some hot coffee from the Gornigrat Coffee Shop Lesser. The cold air brushed the tip of my nose, and the wind penetrated my clothes, but the moment was so peaceful. Here, the noise, the schedule, the worries of the city are all gone. It's a space where only nature and I exist.
