스위스를 여행할 때 가장 많이 듣는 말 중 하나는 “날씨가 반이다”라는 말입니다. 그린델발트도 예외는 아니죠. 맑은 날의 그린델발트는 푸른 초원, 설산, 푸르른 하늘이 완벽한 조화를 이루며 그 자체로 엽서 속 풍경이 됩니다. 하지만 구름이 깔리고 비가 내리면, 그 장엄함은 온데간데없이 사라지고, 마을은 마치 우리 동네 골목처럼 평범해져 버립니다.
저 역시 이번 여행에서 이 말을 뼈저리게 실감했습니다. 일기예보를 보니 그린델발트에 도착하는 첫날은 비 예보. 하필이면 여행의 시작부터 흐린 날씨라니, 처음에는 조금 아쉬움이 밀려왔습니다. 하지만 곧 생각을 바꿨습니다. ‘비 오는 날에만 만날 수 있는 특별한 풍경이 있을지도 몰라.’ 그렇게 검색을 시작했고, 스위스 관광청 사이트에서 한 장의 사진을 발견했습니다. 거대한 바위 절벽 사이로 빙하수가 흘러내리는 장면이었죠.
이름은 글레처슐루흐트(Gletscherschlucht), 우리말로 ‘빙하대협곡’.
숙소는 그린델발트 터미널 근처 아이거 로지(Eiger Lodge)였습니다. 이곳에서 버스를 타면 글레처슐루흐트까지 금세 닿을 수 있습니다. 버스 창밖으로 빗방울이 부드럽게 흩날리고, 도로 옆을 따라 작은 개천이 점점 넓어져 강이 되고, 그 물줄기가 흘러들어가는 방향에 오늘의 목적지가 있다는 생각에 가슴이 설렜습니다.
입구에 도착하니 ‘빙하대협곡’이라는 이름답게, 차갑고 축축한 공기가 먼저 맞이합니다. 매표소를 지나자, 협곡에서 흘러나오는 물소리가 점점 커집니다. 폭우처럼 쏟아지는 물소리가 아니라, 깊은 절벽 속에서 울려 퍼지는 웅장한 울림. 이 순간, ‘비 오는 날 오길 잘했다’는 생각이 스쳤습니다.
글레처슐루흐트는 하부 그린델발트 빙하(Lower Grindelwald Glacier)가 수세기 동안 암석을 깎아내며 형성한 협곡입니다. 중세 말기에는 운터러 빙하가 지금의 마을까지 내려왔고, 이후 빙하가 후퇴하며 그 속살이 드러난 것이 바로 이곳입니다.
협곡 양쪽의 절벽은 약 300m 높이로 솟아 있습니다. 마치 대형 성당 안에 들어온 듯, 고개를 한껏 젖혀도 꼭대기가 보이지 않을 정도입니다. 절벽 표면에는 수만 년 동안 빙하가 지나간 흔적이 선명히 남아 있습니다. 매끈하게 갈린 바위, 빙하수가 뚫어 만든 소용돌이 웅덩이, 그리고 그 안에서 여전히 흐르고 있는 푸른 물.
빙하대협곡의 코스는 왕복 약 2km.
입구를 지나면 곧 금속 데크 위를 걷게 됩니다. 데크 아래로는 거센 물살이 흐르고, 위로는 절벽이 병풍처럼 둘러싸고 있습니다. 비가 내리는 날에는 빗물이 절벽을 타고 내려와 작은 폭포가 여기저기 생기는데, 마치 자연이 즉석에서 연출하는 공연 같습니다.
① 강변 데크 구간
데크는 절벽에 붙어 있어 마치 협곡 벽면을 따라 걷는 기분이 듭니다. 발밑으로는 청록빛 물살이 바위를 때리며 거품을 일으키고, 그 물안개가 은은하게 얼굴에 스칩니다.
② 자연 터널
중간중간 바위가 아치형으로 이어진 구간이 나타납니다. 이곳에서는 비가 맞지 않아 잠시 숨을 고를 수 있습니다. 어둠 속을 걷다 밝은 빛과 폭포 소리가 다시 터져 나올 때, 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 풍경은 영화 속 장면 같습니다.
③ 스파이더 웹(Spiderweb)
협곡 한가운데 170㎡ 규모의 철망 다리가 설치되어 있습니다. 강 위 7m 높이에 매달린 채 서 있으면, 발아래로 거친 물살이 쏜살같이 지나갑니다. 발끝에 힘을 주지 않으면 균형을 잃을 것 같은 아찔함, 그러나 그 짜릿함이 오히려 발걸음을 붙잡습니다.
④ 폭포 구간
빙하수가 떨어져 만든 폭포는 규모는 크지 않지만, 그 물줄기와 소리가 협곡의 울림과 어우러져 웅장하게 들립니다. 석회암 바위의 마블 패턴과 물빛의 조화는 그 자체로 한 폭의 수채화입니다.
5. 캐년 스윙과 야간 라이트업 – 색다른 즐거움
빙하대협곡에서는 단순한 트레킹 외에도 모험적인 액티비티를 즐길 수 있습니다.
대표적인 것이 캐년 스윙(Canyon Swing). 폭포 아래 50m 상공에서 뛰어내리는 고공 스윙은 상상만으로도 심장이 두근거립니다. 만 14세 이상, CHF 149, 사전 예약 필수입니다.
또한 매주 금요일 밤에는 협곡이 조명으로 물드는 야간 라이트업이 진행됩니다. 절벽 벽면이 다양한 색으로 변하며, 빙하수가 그 빛을 반사해 몽환적인 분위기를 만들어 냅니다.
대부분의 여행객은 맑은 날 협곡을 찾지만, 저는 비 오는 날이야말로 이곳의 진가를 느낄 수 있는 시간이라고 생각합니다. 빗물로 인해 수량이 늘어나고, 물살의 속도와 소리가 훨씬 웅장해집니다. 협곡 곳곳에 작은 폭포가 생겨, 평소에는 볼 수 없는 장면이 펼쳐집니다. 무엇보다도 비 오는 날에는 방문객이 적어, 한적하게 풍경을 즐길 수 있습니다. 인기 관광지에서 느끼기 힘든 ‘나만의 공간’ 같은 여유를 맛볼 수 있는 순간이죠.
우리나라에도 강원도 철원 한탄강 주상절리길 같은 곳이 있습니다. 하지만 빙하대협곡은 훨씬 가까운 거리에서 협곡을 마주할 수 있고, 절벽의 깊이와 규모가 비교 불가입니다. 여기에 금속 데크, 자연 터널, 스파이더 웹 같은 다채로운 동선이 있어 걷는 내내 지루할 틈이 없습니다.

"It's half the weather" is one of the most commonly heard words when traveling in Switzerland. Grindelwald is no exception. On a clear day, the Grindelwald becomes a postcard landscape with the perfect combination of the grasslands, snow mountains, and blue skies. But when it gets cloudy and rainy, its majesty disappears, and the town becomes ordinary, just like a neighborhood alley.
On this trip, I also realized it very deeply. The weather forecast says it will rain on the first day of arrival at Grindelwald. It was cloudy from the beginning of the trip, so I was a little disappointed at first. But soon I changed my mind. I started searching like that, and I found a picture on the Swiss tourism agency's website. It was a scene where glacial water flowed through a huge rocky cliff.
The name is Gletcherschlucht, which is the "Bingha Grand Concerto" in Korean.
The accommodation was Eiger Lodge, near the Grindelwald terminal. If you take a bus from here, you can reach Glletchershlucht in no time. I was excited to think that today's destination was in the direction of the flow of raindrops gently flying out of the bus window, and the small stream gradually widened along the road to become a river.
Just like the name of "Collapse of Ice," the cold and damp air greets me first when I arrive at the entrance. As I pass the ticket office, the sound of water flowing out of the gorge becomes louder and louder. It is not the sound of water pouring down like a heavy rain, but the magnificent reverberation that resonates in the deep cliff. At this moment, I thought, "I'm glad it came on a rainy day."
Glletchershlucht is a canyon formed by the Lower Grindelwald Glacier, which carved out rocks for centuries. In the late Middle Ages, the Unterre Glacier descended to what is now the village, and it was here that the glacier retreated and revealed its flesh.
The cliffs on both sides of the gorge rise about 300m high. It is as if you are inside a large cathedral, where you cannot see the top even if you tilt your head as much as you can. The cliff's surface clearly shows signs of glaciers passing for tens of thousands of years. Smoothly ground rocks, swirling pools of glacial water, and blue water still flowing inside them.
The course of the glacial arch is about 2 kilometers round trip.
After passing the entrance, you will soon walk on a metal deck. Strong currents flow under the deck, and cliffs surround it like folding screens above. On a rainy day, rainwater comes down the cliff and small waterfalls occur here and there, just like nature's on-the-fly performance.
① a riverside deck section
The deck is attached to the cliff, making it feel like walking along the canyon wall. The teal current underneath your feet creates bubbles, hitting the rocks, and the mist gently touches your face.
② a natural tunnel
In the middle, a section where the rocks are arched appears. Here, you can catch your breath for a while because the rain is not right. As you walk in the dark and the sound of bright lights and waterfalls burst out again, the scenery unfolding in front of you is like a scene from a movie.
③ Spiderweb
A 170-square-meter wire mesh bridge is installed in the middle of the canyon. When you stand suspended 7 meters above the river, the rough current dashes under your feet. The dizziness of losing balance if you don't apply strength to your toes, but the thrill rather catches your step.
④ a waterfall section
Although the waterfall created by glacial water is not large in scale, its streams and sounds harmonize with the reverberation of the canyon to sound magnificent. The harmony of the marble patterns and water colors of the limestone rocks is a watercolor in itself.
5. Canyon Swing and Night Light Up – An Unusual Pleasure
In addition to simple trekking, you can enjoy adventurous activities in the Glacier Grand Gorge.
A case in point is the Canyon Swing. Just imagining the high-altitude swing that jumps from 50 meters under the waterfall makes my heart pound. Those aged 14 and over, CHF 149, advance reservation is required.
Every Friday night, there is also a night light-up in which the gorge is illuminated. The cliff's walls change into a variety of colors, and glacial water reflects that light to create a dreamy atmosphere.
Most tourists visit the gorge on a clear day, but I think a rainy day is the time to feel the true value of the place. Rainwater increases the volume of water, and the speed and sound of the current become much grander. Small waterfalls are formed throughout the gorge, creating scenes that are not normally seen. Above all, there are few visitors on a rainy day, so you can enjoy the scenery quietly. It's a moment where you can enjoy the relaxation like 'my own space' that is hard to feel in popular tourist destinations.
In Korea, there is a place like the Hantan River Jusangjeol-gil in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province. However, the glacial arch can face the canyon at a much closer distance, and the depth and scale of the cliff are incomparable. There are various routes such as metal decks, natural tunnels, and spider webs, so there is no time to get bored throughout the walk.

The weather is a variable you can't choose from during your travels. But the Great Glacier Concerto turns that variable into opportunity. It transforms into a cool trekking course on a sunny day and a majestic natural concert hall on a rainy day. If I have to spend a day in Grindelwald, especially on a rainy day, I would not hesitate to recommend him here. The symphony produced by the sound of water and rain in the canyon is deeper and more memorable than any orchestra performance.
