두 번의 라우터브루넨, 두 개의 얼굴 – 비 내리던 날과 햇살 가득한 날의 이야기
여행을 하다 보면 날씨가 모든 것을 바꿔 놓는다는 걸 깨닫는 순간이 있습니다.
저에게 라우터브루넨이 바로 그랬습니다.
이번 스위스 여행 중, 라우터브루넨을 두 번 방문했습니다. 첫 번째는 부슬부슬 비가 내리던 날, 그리고 두 번째는 하늘이 눈부시게 맑았던 날. 같은 마을인데, 두 번의 기억은 전혀 다른 색채를 띠고 있습니다.
비 내리던 날의 라우터브루넨
라우터브루넨 역에 도착하자마자 시야에 들어온 것은 도시 한가운데서 수직으로 떨어지는 폭포.
비에 젖은 하늘과 회색빛 절벽, 그리고 그 사이로 흩날리는 물방울이 어우러져, 마치 고요한 그림 속 한 장면 같았습니다. 이날의 라우터브루넨은 조금 차분했고, 어쩐지 묵직한 기운이 감돌았습니다.
도시 중앙에 거대한 폭포가 있다는 것이 신기했고, ‘혹시 폭우가 쏟아져 폭포의 물이 더 많아지면 마을이 위험해지지 않을까?’ 하는 엉뚱한 상상도 했습니다. 비 현실적인 풍경, 그것이 비 오는 날의 라우터브루넨이 주는 첫인상이었습니다.
그리고 햇살 가득한 날의 라우터브루넨
두 번째 방문은 뮈렌에서 곤돌라를 타고 내려와 찾아간 날이었습니다. 하늘은 완벽하게 맑았고, 햇빛은 계곡과 초원, 샬레 지붕 위를 따뜻하게 감싸고 있었습니다. 이날의 라우터브루넨은 정말 ‘동화 속 마을’ 그 자체였습니다.
푸른 초원 사이로 붉은 지붕의 샬레들이 옹기종기 모여 있고, 멀리 보이는 알프스 설산이 하얀 배경이 되어줍니다.
계곡을 따라 걷다 보면 어딜 봐도 그림엽서 같은 풍경이 펼쳐지고, 그 가운데 시원하게 떨어지는 폭포 소리가 배경음악처럼 흐릅니다.
라우터브루넨의 상징, 슈타우바흐 폭포
라우터브루넨의 이름은 ‘라우터(큰 소리)’와 ‘브루넨(샘물)’이 합쳐진 말로, 이곳의 폭포들을 잘 설명해 줍니다. 계곡 곳곳에 무려 72개의 폭포가 흐르지만, 그중 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 슈타우바흐 폭포(Staubbach Falls)입니다.
높이: 스위스에서 두 번째로 높은 폭포
형태: 300m가 넘는 절벽에서 물이 완벽하게 수직으로 낙하
특징: 여름철 따뜻한 바람이 불면 폭포수가 물보라처럼 흩날리는데, 이 현상이 폭포 이름의 유래가 되었습니다.
역사적 일화: 1779년, 문호 괴테가 이 폭포를 보고 영감을 받아 시 ‘폭포 너머 영혼의 노래’를 썼다고 전해집니다.
폭포 감상 포인트
마을 중심부 정면 뷰포인트 라우터브루넨 역에서 도보 5분. 벤치와 꽃길이 잘 조성되어 있고, 교회 첨탑과 함께 폭포를 담으면 엽서 같은 사진이 나옵니다.

봄가을에 개방. 계단과 터널을 따라 약 1015분 오르면 폭포 뒤편에서 물줄기를 투명하게 감상할 수 있습니다.
바위 안쪽 통로에는 조명이 설치되어 있고, 안전 펜스와 미끄럼 방지 바닥이 있어 비교적 안전합니다.
라우터브루넨을 특별하게 만드는 것
라우터브루넨은 단순히 폭포의 도시가 아닙니다. 그린델발트와 더불어 융프라우로 향하는 관문이며, 쉴트호른·뮈렌으로 가는 교통의 요충지입니다. 그리고 무엇보다, 날씨에 따라 전혀 다른 매력을 보여주는 곳이죠.
비 오는 날엔 고요하고 신비로운 분위기로, 맑은 날엔 동화 속 마을처럼 화사하고 따뜻하게 변합니다.
그 두 얼굴을 모두 볼 수 있었던 건 제 여행에서 가장 큰 행운 중 하나였습니다.

Two Lauter Brunen, Two Faces – The Story of a Rainy Day and a Suny Day
There are moments when I travel and realize that the weather changes everything.
That's exactly what Router Brunen did to me.
During this trip to Switzerland, I visited Lauterbrunen twice. The first was on a drizzly rain day, and the second was on a blindingly clear sky. It's the same town, but the memories of the two times have completely different colors.
Router Brunen on a Rainy Day
Upon arriving at Lauterbrunen station, what came into view was a waterfall falling vertically in the middle of the city.
The rain-soaked sky, the gray cliffs, and the water dripping through them combined, and it was like a scene in a still painting. Lauterbrunen was a little calm on this day, and somehow there was a heavy atmosphere.
It was fascinating that there was a huge waterfall in the center of the city, and I even thought wildly, 'Wouldn't the town be in danger if heavy rain caused more water from the waterfall?' An unrealistic landscape, that was the first impression of Router Brunen on a rainy day.

The second visit was the day I went down the gondola from Muren. The sky was perfectly clear, and the sun was warmly surrounded by valleys, grasslands, and chalet roofs. Lauterbrunen on this day was really a 'fairytale village' itself.
Red-roofed chalets huddle through the green meadows, and the snow mountain in the Alps in the distance gives a white background.
As you walk along the valley, you can see a picture postcard-like landscape everywhere, and the sound of a cool waterfall flows like background music.
Staubach Falls, the symbol of Lauterbrunen
Router Brunen's name is a combination of "Louter" and "Brunen" which explains the waterfalls here well. As many as 72 waterfalls flow throughout the valley, but the most noticeable of them is Staubach Falls.
Height: Switzerland's 2nd tallest waterfall
Shape: Water falls perfectly vertically from a cliff over 300m
Characteristic: When a warm breeze blows in the summer, the waterfall splatters like a spray, and this phenomenon is the origin of the waterfall's name.
Historical Anecdotes: In 1779, Munho Goethe is said to have written a poem 'Song of the Soul beyond the Falls' inspired by the sight of the waterfall.
Point to watch the waterfall
A 5-minute walk from the town centre front viewpoint router brunen station. Bench and flower path are well established, and a waterfall with a church spire will give you a postcard-like photo.

Open in spring and fall. Climb the stairs and tunnel for about 10 to 15 minutes, and you can enjoy the water stream transparently behind the waterfall.
The inside walkway of the rock is equipped with lighting, safety fences and non-slip floors, making it relatively safe.
What Makes Router Brunen Special
Lauterbrunen is not just a city of waterfalls. It is a gateway to Jungfrau along with Grindelwald, and a transportation hub to Shildhorn and Muren. And most of all, it's a place that shows completely different charms depending on the weather.
On a rainy day, it turns into a calm and mysterious atmosphere, and on a clear day, it turns bright and warm like a village in a fairy tale.
Being able to see both of those faces was one of the greatest lucks of my trip.
