스위스를 여행한다고 하면 대부분 사람들이 가장 먼저 떠올리는 곳이 있다. 바로 융프라우요흐(Jungfraujoch)다.. ‘유럽의 지붕’이라고 불리는 그곳은 해발 3,454m에 위치해 있어, 세계 곳곳에서 몰려든 관광객들이 알프스를 한눈에 감상할 수 있는 상징적인 장소다.
나 역시 스위스 여행 계획을 세우면서 “융프라우는 꼭 가야지!”라는 생각을 가장 먼저 했다. 하지만 막상 일정을 짜다 보니 고민이 한두 가지가 아니었다. 스위스는 교통편이 워낙 잘 되어 있어서, 여러 가지 루트와 티켓 옵션들이 존재한다. “하프페어카드, 스위스패스, VIP패스… 뭐가 좋은 거지?” 여행 전부터 머리가 복잡해졌다.
결국 선택한 건 융프라우 VIP패스. 특히 내가 눈여겨본 건 아이거익스프레스 곤돌라였다. 이 곤돌라를 타고 아이거글레처까지 올라가는 길은, 사진으로만 봐도 경이로웠다. 그리고 실제로 경험한 뒤에는 내가 이 길을 선택한 것이 최고의 선택이었다는 확신이 들었다.
이제부터 내가 직접 경험한 아이거글레처 곤돌라 여행기를 풀어보려 한다.
1장. 그린델발트 터미널에서 시작하는 여정
스위스 여행은 언제나 기차역에서 시작된다. 내가 출발한 곳은 인터라켄.
인터라켄에서 그린델발트 터미널까지 기차를 타고 이동했는데, 창밖으로 보이는 풍경만으로도 마음이 설레기 시작했다.
그린델발트 터미널(Grindelwald Terminal)은 융프라우 지역 관광의 관문 같은 곳이다. 여기서부터 아이거익스프레스 곤돌라를 타고 아이거글레처(Eiger Glacier)까지 올라갈 수 있다. 터미널 안에는 현대적인 시설들이 잘 갖춰져 있어서, 그냥 쇼핑몰 같은 느낌도 들었다. 곤돌라 탑승장에 들어서자, 드디어 본격적인 여행이 시작된다는 설렘이 밀려왔다.
2장. 아이거익스프레스 곤돌라 탑승
아이거익스프레스 곤돌라는 최신식 곤돌라답게 내부가 넓고 쾌적했다.
좌석에 앉아 창밖을 바라보니, 그 순간부터 마치 동화책 속 풍경이 펼쳐졌다.
오른쪽 풍경 – 평화로운 알프스 마을
진행 방향 오른쪽에는 스위스의 전통 가옥인 샬레(Chalet)들이 보였다. 짙푸른 초원 위에 아담하게 자리한 나무집, 그 앞마당에서 뛰어노는 아이들, 목장에 풀을 뜯는 소들 마치 한 편의 애니메이션 속 배경 같았다. 특히 여름철이라 초록빛이 강하게 번져 있었는데, 그 풍경을 보면서 “내가 진짜 스위스에 와 있구나”라는 생각이 절로 들었다.

그리고 곤돌라의 왼쪽으로는 전혀 다른 세계가 펼쳐졌다. 바로 아이거 북벽(Eiger Nordwand). 수직으로 치솟은 거대한 바위 절벽은 경이로움과 동시에 두려움마저 느끼게 했다. “저 산을 인간이 오를 수 있을까?”라는 생각이 들 정도로 위압적이었다. 그 순간, 자연 앞에 선 인간의 존재가 얼마나 작은지를 깨닫게 되었다.
3장. 만년설의 세계로
곤돌라는 점점 고도를 높였다. 초록빛 초원과 마을이 점점 멀어지고, 드디어 눈 덮인 봉우리들이 눈앞에 나타났다.

사진이나 영상으로만 보던 그 풍경이 실제로 펼쳐지자, 감탄사가 절로 나왔다.
햇빛을 받아 반짝이는 눈과 빙하는 그야말로 자연이 만든 예술품이었다.
한순간, 내가 다른 행성에 와 있는 듯한 착각이 들 정도였다.
4장. 아이거글레처 도착
드디어 곤돌라는 아이거글레처 역에 도착했다.
이곳은 융프라우요흐로 올라가는 산악열차와 연결되는 지점이기도 하다.
하지만 나에게는 곤돌라를 타고 올라오는 그 여정 자체가 이미 목적지였다.
플랫폼에 내려서 주변을 둘러보니, 사방이 눈과 얼음으로 뒤덮여 있었다.
찬바람이 얼굴을 스치며 스위스 알프스의 매서운 기운을 전해주었다.
나는 이곳에서 한참 동안 자리를 떠나지 못했다.
그저 서서 눈앞의 풍경을 바라보는 것만으로도 충분했기 때문이다.
5장. 무제한 곤돌라의 매력
내가 선택한 융프라우 VIP패스는 이 곤돌라를 하루 종일 무제한으로 이용할 수 있게 해줬다.
덕분에 아침부터 저녁까지 몇 번이고 곤돌라를 오르락내리락 했다.
“곤돌라를 몇 번씩이나 타면 지겹지 않을까?”
전혀 그렇지 않았다.
아침, 점심, 오후, 저녁… 시간대에 따라 풍경이 달라졌다.
빛의 방향이 바뀌면서 산의 그림자가 변하고, 구름이 흘러가며 다른 풍경을 만들어냈다.
같은 길을 몇 번이고 오르내리면서도 매번 새로운 장면을 만날 수 있었다.
6장. 날씨와 여행의 변수
스위스 여행에서 날씨는 절대적인 변수다.
맑은 날에는 천상의 풍경이 펼쳐지지만, 흐리거나 눈보라가 치면 아무것도 보이지 않는다.
나는 여행 전날, 융프라우 실시간 웹캠을 확인하고 티켓을 구매했다.
다행히 맑은 날씨를 잡을 수 있었고, 덕분에 최고의 경험을 할 수 있었다.
아이거글레처에서 바라본 풍경은 내 인생 여행의 하이라이트였다. 한국에서 수많은 산을 보아왔지만, 알프스의 스케일과 장엄함은 비교할 수 없었다. 특히 아이거 북벽을 곤돌라에서 올려다본 순간의 감정은 평생 잊지 못할 것이다.
나는 속으로 이렇게 생각했다. “만약 캄보디아처럼 산이 없는 나라 사람들이 이곳에 온다면, 이건 진짜 평생의 추억이 될 거다.”
그리고 동시에 “산이 많은 한국 사람인 나도 이렇게 감탄하는데, 이건 그냥 인류의 보물 같은 곳이구나”라는 생각이 들었다.
하루 동안 곤돌라를 몇 번이나 탔는지 셀 수도 없다. 아침에 봤던 풍경, 오후에 본 풍경, 저녁 햇살이 비친 풍경… 모든 장면이 각각 다른 그림 같았다. VIP패스 덕분에 시간과 돈 걱정 없이 마음껏 즐길 수 있었던 건 정말 큰 행운이었다.
스위스 여행을 마치고 돌아와서도, 나는 여전히 아이거글레처 곤돌라를 떠올린다. 사진 속에 담긴 풍경을 보며 “저건 꿈이 아니었을까?”라는 생각을 할 정도다. 이번 여행에서 나는 깨달았다. 여행의 본질은 새로운 곳을 가보는 것만이 아니라, 그곳에서 느끼는 감정과 순간들을 마음속에 간직하는 것이라는 것을.

When people think of Switzerland, there is a place that comes to mind first. It is Jungfraujoch. Called the "Roof of Europe," it is located at 3,454m above sea level, making it an iconic place where tourists from all over the world can enjoy the Alps at a glance.
When I was making plans for my trip to Switzerland, I first thought, "I must go to Jungfrau!" But when I made the plan, I was worried about more than a few things. Switzerland has such good transportation that there are many routes and ticket options. "Half fair card, Swiss pass, VIP pass… What's good about it?" My head got complicated even before the trip.
In the end, I chose Jungfrau VIP Pass. Especially, what I noticed was the Iger Express gondola. The road up to Igerglletcher on this gondola was amazing just by looking at the picture. And after the actual experience, I was convinced that my choice was the best option.
From now on, I'm going to unravel the travelogue of Igerglletcher gondola that I experienced firsthand.
Chapter 1. Journey from Grindelwald Terminal
My trip to Switzerland always starts at the train station. I left Interlaken.
I traveled by train from Interlaken to the Grindelwald terminal, and the view out the window alone began to excite my heart.
The Grindelwald Terminal is like a gateway to tourism in the Jungfrau region. From here, you can ride the Iger Express gondola to the Eiger Glacier. The terminal is well equipped with modern facilities, so it felt like a shopping mall. As I entered the gondola boarding area, the excitement that the trip would finally begin in earnest was pushed back.
Chapter 2. Iger Express Gondola Boarding
The Iger Express gondola was spacious and comfortable inside like a state-of-the-art gondola.
As I sat in my seat and looked out the window, from that moment on, the scenery in a fairy tale spread out.

To the right of the proceeding direction, I could see the Chalets, traditional Swiss houses. A small tree house on a deep blue grass, children running in the front yard, and cows grazing on the ranch were like the background in an animation. Especially in the summer, the green light spread strongly, and the scenery made me think, "I'm in Switzerland for real."

And to the left of the gondola, a completely different world unfolded. It was the Eiger Nordwald. The huge rock cliff that soared vertically made me feel both wonder and fear. It was so overwhelming that I thought, "Can humans climb that mountain?" At that moment, I realized how small human beings' presence in front of nature was.
Chapter 3. Into the world of ice caps
The gondola gradually raised its altitude. The green grasslands and villages grew farther and farther away, and at last the snow-covered peaks appeared in front of me.

When the scenery that I had only seen in pictures or videos actually unfolded, I couldn't help but exclaim.
The glistening snow and glaciers in the sun were simply art works made by nature.
For a moment, I felt like I was on another planet.
Chapter 4. Arrives at Iger Glocher
At last, Gondola arrived at Eigerglletcher station.
It is also connected to the mountain train that goes up to Jungfraujoch.
But for me, the journey up the gondola itself was already the destination.
When I got off the platform and looked around, it was covered in snow and ice everywhere.
The cold wind brushed the face and delivered the fierce energy of the Swiss Alps.
I haven't been able to leave here for a long time.
This is because it was enough to just stand and look at the scenery in front of me.
Chapter 5. Unlimited Gondola's charm
My chosen Jungfrau VIP Pass gave me unlimited access to this gondola all day.
Thanks to this, I went up and down the gondola several times from morning to evening.
"Wouldn't it be boring to ride gondola multiple times?"
It wasn't like that at all.
Breakfast, lunch, afternoon, dinner... The scenery changed according to the time.
As the direction of light changed, the shadow of the mountain changed, and clouds flowed, creating a different landscape.
Even though I went up and down the same road again and again, I was able to meet new scenes every time.
Chapter 6. Weather and Travel Variables
The weather is an absolute variable in a trip to Switzerland.
On a clear day, the heavenly scenery unfolds, but when it's cloudy or blizzard, you can't see anything.
The day before my trip, I checked the Jungfrau real-time webcam and purchased a ticket.
Fortunately, I was able to catch the clear weather, and thanks to this, I was able to have the best experience.
The view from Igerglletcher was the highlight of my life trip. Despite seeing numerous mountains in Korea, the scale and majesty of the Alps were incomparable. I will never forget the emotion of looking up from the gondola, especially the moment I saw the northern wall of Iger.
I thought to myself, "If people from a mountainless country like Cambodia come here, it will be a real memory for a lifetime."
And at the same time, I thought, "As a Korean with a lot of mountains, I also admire it like this, and this is just a place like a treasure of mankind."
I can't even count how many times I rode the gondola in one day. The scenery I saw in the morning, the scenery in the afternoon, the scenery in the evening sun... Every scene was like a different picture. I was very lucky to be able to enjoy the VIP Pass without worrying about time and money.
Even when I come back from a trip to Switzerland, I still think of Eigergletcher gondola. Looking at the scenery in the picture, I even thought, "Wouldn't that have been a dream?" On this trip, I realized. The essence of travel is not only to visit new places, but to keep the feelings and moments felt there in mind.
