스위스 여행을 준비하는 분들이라면 누구나 한 번쯤 들어봤을 이름이 있습니다. 바로 융프라우(Jungfrau).
저에게도 이곳은 오랫동안 버킷리스트에 자리 잡고 있던 ‘꿈의 여행지’였습니다.
“유럽의 지붕(Top of Europe).”
이 수식어 하나만으로도 이미 마음을 설레게 하지 않나요?
해발 3,466m에 위치한 융프라우요흐 역은 유럽에서 가장 높은 곳에 있는 기차역이자, 세계적으로 손꼽히는 고산 관광지입니다.
백두산 천지(약 2,700m)까지 올라가 본 경험은 있었지만, 3,400m 이상의 고도는 저도 처음이었습니다. 고산병에 대한 걱정 때문에 출발 전에는 산소통까지 챙기려 했지만 결국 구하지 못했죠. 다행히 몸 상태에 큰 이상은 없었습니다. 오히려, 두근거리는 기대와 설렘이 더 크게 다가왔습니다.
2. 융프라우로 가는 길 – 아이거 익스프레스와 아이거글레처
융프라우로 향하는 여정은 단순한 이동이 아니라, 그 자체가 하나의 여행 코스였습니다.
저는 그린델발트 터미널에서 출발해 최신 곤돌라 **아이거 익스프레스(Eiger Express)**를 타고 이동했습니다.
곤돌라 창밖으로 펼쳐진 풍경은 이미 그림 같았습니다. 초록빛 초원 위로 점점 드러나는 아이거 북벽, 멀리서 보이는 설산의 위용, 그리고 산악 마을의 아기자기한 모습까지… “벌써 절반은 성공했다”는 생각이 들더군요.
아이거글레처(Eiger Glacier)에서 내려 다시 산악열차를 타고 오르니, 드디어 도착한 곳이 바로 융프라우요흐 역.
기차에서 내리는 순간, 공기가 확연히 달라지는 걸 느낄 수 있었습니다. 차갑고, 묵직하고, 고요했습니다.
3. 디스커버리 투어 – 융프라우를 한눈에 즐기는 길
역을 빠져나오면 ‘디스커버리 투어(Discovery Tour)’라는 안내판이 눈에 띕니다.
이 길을 따라가면 융프라우의 주요 명소들을 차례대로 둘러볼 수 있습니다. 얼음궁전, 스핑크스 전망대, 파노라마 영상관, 알파인 센세이션 전시관 등등… 그냥 전망대 하나 보고 끝나는 곳이 아니라, 작은 테마파크처럼 체험거리가 다양하더군요.
패키지 관광객들은 30분 남짓 머물다 급히 떠나지만, 저는 자유여행이었기에 2시간 이상 천천히 둘러봤습니다. 여유롭게 걷고, 사진 찍고, 숨을 고르며 눈에 담는 시간이 더 깊은 감동을 주었습니다.
4. 베르크하우스(Berghaus) – 유럽에서 가장 높은 레스토랑
첫 번째로 들른 곳은 베르크하우스. 이곳은 단순한 레스토랑이 아니라, ‘유럽에서 가장 높은 곳에 있는 레스토랑’이라는 타이틀을 가지고 있습니다.
나무 인테리어로 꾸며진 따뜻한 실내, 사방으로 트인 통유리 창 너머로는 **알레치 빙하(Aletsch Glacier)**와 설산의 파노라마가 펼쳐집니다.
여기서는 특별한 재미가 있는데, 융프라우 VIP 티켓을 보여주면 신라면 한 그릇을 제공합니다. 한국인 여행객들 사이에서는 이미 유명한 이야기죠. 눈 덮인 알프스 풍경을 바라보며 뜨끈한 라면을 먹는 경험은 정말 잊지 못할 순간이었습니다.
치즈 퐁듀가 맛있다는 이야기를 듣긴 했지만 가격이 만만치 않아 패스. 하지만 라면 한 그릇만으로도 충분히 특별한 추억이 되었습니다.
5. 파노라마 영상관 – 알프스를 360°로 만나는 순간
다음으로 찾은 곳은 융프라우 파노라마 영상관.
해발 3,454m에 위치한 ‘Top of Europe’ 건물 내부에는 360° 파노라마 영상을 상영하는 공간이 있습니다.
짧게는 5분, 길게는 10분 정도 상영되는데, 거대한 스크린을 통해 알프스의 사계절, 빙하의 장엄함, 설산의 변화를 감각적으로 체험할 수 있습니다. 날씨가 흐리거나 바람이 심한 날에도 상영되기 때문에, 실외 전망을 즐기지 못하는 날이라면 대체 코스로 제격입니다.
6. 스핑크스 전망대 – 유럽에서 하늘과 가장 가까운 곳
융프라우의 백미는 단연 **스핑크스 전망대(Sphinx Observatory)**였습니다.
해발 3,571m에 위치한 이 전망대는 스위스 내에서 두 번째로 높은 대중 전망대이자, 세계적으로도 손꼽히는 천문·기상 관측소입니다.
엘리베이터를 타고 단숨에 올라가면, 눈앞에 알레치 빙하가 장엄하게 펼쳐집니다. 북쪽으로는 아이거(Eiger), 묀히(Mönch), 융프라우(Jungfrau) 세 봉우리가 한눈에 들어오죠.
날씨가 맑다면 멀리 프랑스 보주 산맥과 독일의 흑림(Black Forest)까지 볼 수 있다는데, 아쉽게도 제 방문 날은 구름이 많아 확인할 수는 없었습니다.
1937년에 개관해 지금까지도 다양한 과학 연구가 이루어지고 있다는 사실이 인상 깊었습니다. 관광지로서의 화려함 뒤에, 오랜 세월 학문적 가치를 이어온 공간이 있다는 게 더 특별하게 느껴졌습니다.
7. 알파인 센세이션 – 철도 역사와 감동
스핑크스 전망대에서 얼음궁전으로 이어지는 길에는 알파인 센세이션(Alpine Sensation) 전시관이 있습니다.
약 250m 길이의 전시 복도는 멀티미디어 영상, 조명, 사진, 음악으로 꾸며져 있는데, 융프라우 철도의 건설 역사와 알프스 관광의 발전 과정을 생생하게 보여줍니다.
1912년 철도 개통부터 2012년 100주년까지, 수많은 사람들의 도전과 헌신이 있었음을 다시금 깨닫게 되었죠. 단순한 전시를 넘어, 이곳을 거닐다 보면 알프스 관광의 숨은 뒷이야기를 만나는 듯한 감동이 밀려옵니다.
8. 얼음궁전(Ice Palace) – 빙하 속 얼음 터널
융프라우에서 가장 인상 깊었던 체험 중 하나는 **얼음궁전(Ice Palace)**이었습니다.
빙하 속 약 20m 아래에 만들어진 이 얼음 터널은 1930년대 산악가이드들이 도끼와 톱으로 직접 뚫어 만든 곳이라고 합니다.
터널 안은 빙하로 둘러싸여 있고, 곰·펭귄·독수리·아이스에이지 캐릭터 같은 얼음 조각들이 전시되어 있습니다. 투명하고 차가운 얼음벽이 거대한 거울처럼 반사되어 환상적인 분위기를 자아냈습니다. 다만 바닥이 매우 미끄럽기 때문에 반드시 난간을 잡고 이동해야 합니다.
9. 플라토 전망 테라스 – 알레치 빙하의 파노라마
얼음궁전 출구를 따라 계단을 오르면 만나는 곳이 **플라토 전망 테라스(Plateau Terrace)**입니다.
여기는 실제 빙하 위에 놓인 오픈 플랫폼으로, 사방으로 펼쳐진 설산과 알레치 빙하의 장관을 한눈에 감상할 수 있습니다.
이곳은 많은 여행객들이 기념사진을 남기는 ‘포토존’으로도 유명합니다. 스위스 국기 옆에서 사진을 찍으면 마치 광고 속 한 장면 같은 분위기가 연출됩니다.
10. 여행 팁 – 준비물과 유의사항
복장: 실내는 따뜻하지만, 빙하 내부와 외부 테라스는 영하권입니다. 반드시 패딩, 장갑, 모자 등 3겹 이상으로 준비하세요.
안전 장비: 외부 테라스와 빙하 위는 매우 미끄럽습니다. 아이스 그립이나 방수 신발이 있으면 훨씬 안전합니다.
체력 관리: 고도가 높아 산소가 희박합니다. 움직임을 천천히 하고, 필요하다면 산소 캔을 준비하는 것도 방법입니다.
소요 시간: 주요 코스를 모두 보려면 최소 2시간 이상은 필요합니다. 여유롭게 즐기려면 반나절 이상을 추천합니다.
11. 마무리 – ‘유럽의 지붕’에서의 하루
융프라우는 단순히 높은 산에 올라가는 경험이 아니라, 자연·과학·역사·문화가 한데 어우러진 복합적인 체험이었습니다.
스핑크스 전망대에서의 장엄한 설경, 얼음궁전 속 차가운 빙하의 터널, 베르크하우스에서의 따뜻한 라면 한 그릇, 그리고 파노라마 영상관에서 만난 알프스의 사계절까지…
하루 동안 경험한 모든 순간이 제게는 평생 기억에 남을 버킷리스트 완성의 순간이었습니다.
“죽기 전에 꼭 가봐야 할 곳”이라는 말이 전혀 과장이 아니었습니다.

1. Jungfrau on the bucket list
There is a name that anyone preparing to travel to Switzerland may have heard of at least once: Jungfrau.
For me, too, this was a 'dream travel destination' that had been on the bucket list for a long time.
"Top of Europe."
Doesn't this modifier already make your heart flutter?
Located at 3,466 m above sea level, Jungfrauyoch Station is the highest railway station in Europe and one of the world's leading alpine tourist attractions.
I had the experience of climbing to Cheonji (about 2,700m) in Mt. Baekdu, but it was my first time to reach an altitude of more than 3,400m. Due to worries about altitude sickness, I even tried to pack an oxygen tank before departure, but I couldn't get it in the end. Fortunately, I didn't have any major problems with my physical condition. Rather, the excitement and excitement of my heart came closer.
2. Road to Jungfrau – Iger Express and Iger Glletcher
The journey to Jungfrau was not just a journey, it was a journey in itself.
I departed from the Grindelwald terminal and travelled on the latest gondola **Eiger Express**.
The scenery outside the gondola window was already picturesque. The northern wall of the Aeger that is gradually revealed on the green grass, the majesty of the snow mountain seen from a distance, and the cute appearance of the mountain village… I thought, "Half of it is already successful."
When I got off at Eiger Glacier and took the mountain train again, I finally arrived at Jungfraujoch Station.
As soon as I got off the train, I could feel the air changing drastically. It was cold, heavy, and still.
3. Discovery Tour – A Way to Enjoy Jungfrau at a Glance
When you leave the station, you'll notice a notice board called the Discovery Tour.
Follow this road and you'll be able to tour Jungfrau's main attractions one by one. The Ice Palace, the Sphinx Observatory, the Panorama Museum, the Alpine Sensation Exhibition Hall, and more… It's not just a place where you end up looking at an observatory, but there are various things to experience like a small theme park.
Package tourists stay for about 30 minutes and then leave in a hurry, but since it was a free trip, I looked around slowly for more than two hours. The time to walk, take pictures, catch your breath, and capture them in your eyes impressed you more deeply.
4. Berghaus – Europe's tallest restaurant
The first stop was Berckhaus. It's not just a restaurant, it's also called the 'highest restaurant in Europe.'
A warm interior decorated with wood interiors, a panoramic view of the snow mountain and the **Aletsch Glacier beyond the open glass window in all directions.
It's a special fun here, and if you show us your Jungfrau VIP ticket, we'll serve you a bowl of Shin Ramen. It's already a famous story among Korean tourists. The experience of eating hot ramen while looking at the snowy Alps was a really unforgettable moment.
I've heard that cheese fondue is delicious, but I pass it because it's expensive. But a bowl of ramen alone made it a special memory.
5. Panorama Imaging Museum – the moment you meet the Alps at 360°
The next place I visited was the Jungfrau Panorama Museum.
Located at 3,454m above sea level, the 'Top of Europe' building has a 360-degree panoramic view.
It runs for as little as 5 minutes and as long as 10 minutes, and you can experience sensibly the four seasons of the Alps, the majesty of the glaciers, and the changes of snow mountains through the huge screen. It is also screened on cloudy or windy days, so it is perfect for an alternative course if you do not enjoy the outdoor view.
6. Sphinx Observatory - closest to the sky in Europe
Jungfrau's highlight was by far **Sphinx Observatory**.
Located at 3,571m above sea level, the observatory is the second highest public observatory in Switzerland and one of the world's leading astronomical and weather stations.
As you dive up the elevator, you'll see the Alech Glacier magnificently unfold in front of you. To the north, you'll see three peaks: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
If the weather is clear, you can see the French Bozoo Mountains and Germany's Black Forest in the distance, but unfortunately, I couldn't confirm my visit because there were many clouds.
I was impressed by the fact that various scientific studies have been conducted since its opening in 1937. Behind the splendor as a tourist destination, it felt more special that there was a space that had continued academic value for a long time.
7. Alpine Sensation – Railway History and Inspiration
The road leading from the Sphinx Observatory to the Ice Palace is the Alpine Sensation Exhibition Hall.
About 250 m long, the exhibition hallways are decorated with multimedia videos, lighting, photographs, and music, vividly showing the construction history of the Jungfrau railway and the development of Alpine tourism.
From the opening of the railway in 1912 to the 100th anniversary in 2012, I realized once again that there were many challenges and dedication from people. Beyond simple exhibitions, walking through this place gives me the impression of encountering the hidden behind-the-scenes story of Alpine tourism.
8. Ice Palace – Ice Tunnel in Ice
One of the most impressive experiences at Jungfrau was **Ice Palace**.
Built about 20 meters under the glacier, the ice tunnel is said to have been made by mountain guides in the 1930s with axes and saws.
The tunnel is surrounded by glaciers, and ice sculptures such as bears, penguins, eagles, and ice age characters are displayed. The clear, cold ice walls reflected like giant mirrors, creating a fantastic atmosphere. However, because the floor is very slippery, you must hold onto the railing and move around.
9.Plateau View Terrace – Panorama of Alechi Glacier
Climb the stairs along the exit of the Ice Palace and you'll meet **Plateau Terrace**.
This is an open platform on a real glacier, with a spectacular view of the snow mountains and Alechi Glacier spread out in all directions.
It is also famous as a 'photo zone' where many tourists take pictures. Taking a picture next to the Swiss flag creates the atmosphere like a scene in an advertisement.
10. Travel Tips – Supplies and Precautions
Clothes: It's warm inside, but the inside and outside of the glacier are below zero. Make sure to have at least three layers of padding, gloves, and a hat.
Safety gear: Outside terraces and above glaciers are very slippery. It's much safer with ice grips or waterproof shoes.
Physical fitness: Oxygen is thin due to its high altitude. Slow down your movements, and have a can of oxygen ready if necessary.
Time taken: You'll need at least 2 hours to see all the major courses. More than half a day is recommended to enjoy leisurely.
11. Finishing – a day on the 'Roof of Europe'
Jungfrau was not just an experience of climbing a high mountain, but a complex experience of nature, science, history, and culture.
From the majestic snow scene from the Sphinx Observatory, the tunnel of the cold glacier in the ice palace, a bowl of warm ramen from the Berghouse, and the four seasons of the Alps that we met at the Panorama Museum...
Every moment I experienced during the day was a moment to complete my bucket list that I will remember for the rest of my life.
"A must-see place before you die" was not an exaggeration at all.
